North Korea earned its first win in World Cup Asia Q2 qualifying thanks to a hat trick from Chung Il-kwan.
North Korea’s national soccer team thrashed Myanmar 6-1 on Sunday at Tuunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar, behind a hat trick from Chung Il-gwan and goals from Han Kwang-sung, Choi Ju-sung, and Ri Hyong-jin in the second match of the 2026 North and Central American World Cup Asia Second Qualifying Group B.
It was North Korea’s first win since a loss to Syria and its first A-match victory in more than four years and two months since a 1-0 win over Sri Lanka on Sept. 10, 2019, in the second Asian qualifier for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.



North Korea will advance to the third round of qualifying if they finish 1-2 in Group B (North Korea Japan Syria Myanmar).

Its age-group national teams recently competed at the Hangzhou Asian Games, and the A team is now in World Cup qualifying.
North Korea lost its first game against Syria 0-1, but the team came out firing on all cylinders on the day, winning convincingly.
North Korean striker Jeong Il-kwan scored three goals in the first 30 minutes, nine minutes into the second half, and 21 minutes into the second half, while Han Kwang-sung, one of North Korea’s top prospects, scored in the 38th minute.

Born in 1998, Han Kwang-sung joined Juventus from Perugia in Italy.
North Korea sealed the victory with goals from Choe Ju-sung in the 34th minute and Lee Hyong-jin, who came on as a substitute in the 25th minute.
